The BQ25071DQCT is a battery charger solution targeted for space-constrained, high-performance battery-powered applications in the industrial and telecommunications markets.
The BQ25071DQCT is a synchronous rectifier battery charger with a complete charging algorithim in a single IC. With its small package, very low component count, and wide input voltage range (36V to 60V) this device is suitable for quick charging of two and three series-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer battery packs. The device runs a constant current/constant voltage (CC-CV) charging cycle with an adjustable current and voltage limit.
The device features internal cell balancing, temperature and timer charging safety features and can be programed with an analog voltage or with a SPI/I2C interface. In addition to this,it has an integrated protection-from-reverse-charging protection that is enabled only when the input voltage is within a pre-defined window. The integrated battery protection circuitry and the N-channel FET works together with the on-board flexible charge schemes.
The device provides the following features: a high-efficiency charging cycle, full protection from over temperature, overcharging and current overload, adjustable input current limit, and adjustable switching frequency. A programmable CC/CV charging algorithm allows for accurate charging and top-of-charge detection and termination capacity.
The BQ25071DQCT is targeted for use with small-form-factor applications in industrial and telecommunications markets, due to the high efficiency, low component count and wide input voltage range. This charger is particularly suitable for space-constrained areas, where the minimum number of components requires a small form-factor and extremely low power consumption.
The BQ25071DQCT integrates a synchronous rectifier with internal control loop that drives a PWM regulator. The input power comes from an AC or DC source, such DC adapters, batteries, and is coupled to the input of the converter. The input current is shared by the internal DC-DC converter and the FET synchronous rectifier, creating a low noise regulated supply at the regulated voltage.
The converter is controlled by an internal current sensing circuit to establish the charge cycle; when the voltage and current level reach a set value, the converter reduces current to a maintenance or trickle current level and establishes a "top of charge" state. The current sensing circuit can also be used for battery temperature and state of charge sensing and it is also used for pre-charging the battery.
The default input voltage for the BQ25071DQCT is 36V but the device can go up to 60V in order to support different battery pack designs and chemistries. Also the integrated N-FET rectifier allows for high input voltage spikes and robust protection from reverse voltage.
The output of the synchronous rectifier is regulated by an integrated PWM controller, an oscillator to set the switching frequency, a current feedback loop, a voltage adjustment pin and an output voltage regulation block. The BQ25071DQCT provides a combined current control and feedback loop with a 300mA reference current, resulting in a low harmonic distortion and a high current-mode with fast transient response. It also has an open loop current limit, over-temperature protection, short circuit protection and an adjustable timeout limit. The PWM controller also features a configurable voltage regulation loop, allowing for improved efficiency and a higher output voltage ripple.
The BQ25071DQCT is an ideal device for battery-powered applications where a low component count, a high efficiency and a wide input voltage range are required.
