The BQ40Z60EVM-578 evaluation board is a flexible, multi-purpose platform for designers interested in evaluating Texas Instruments (TI) BQ40Z60 battery pack controller, fuel gauge IC and TI\'s portable system solutions. With features such as system pack drain/charge control, automatic selection, predefined settings and system-level fault reporting, the BQ40Z60EVM-578 supports the testing of various system power management configurations and profiles. In addition, the board comes with a powerful software suite to assist in the evaluation of the BQ40Z60.

The BQ40Z60EVM-578 application field starts with basic fuel-gauge IC and battery pack controller evaluation, system-level battery monitor verification and demonstration. This evaluation board can be a reference design for 2-4 cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer cell evaluation and design concentration. The board includes high accuracy temperature measurement IC and balancer..

For evaluation of the BQ40Z60 battery system monitor, the BQ40Z60EVM-578 contains characteristics of the standard system pack, such as pack voltage, active balance current, pack temperature and system capacity. These evaluation board capacities are combined with the features of the BQ40Z60 IC to create a platform able to both evaluate and demonstrate full system-level protection and features. Furthermore, the board is supported by Software GUI for advanced monitoring and control. The BQ40Z60EVM-578 provides the circuitry necessary to monitor battery pack design parameters and system performance with user-defined settings. It offers sample code to easily simulate system interaction with connected charging and load device and can be a reference design for quick prototyping. The evaluation board implements TI’s complete smart battery solution, providing the user with an environment to explore the full capabilities of the BQ40Z60, such as 3 status LED’s to indicate capacity and fault status.

The working principle of the BQ40Z60EVM-578 is based on the monitoring of different voltage points throughout the system. The BQ40Z60 will enable protection features such as Main Negative Validation, Cell Overvoltage Protection, Cell Over-temperature Protection, Cell Overcurrent Protection, Over-drain Protection, and Overcharge Protection. When these values are exceeded, the IC will take action to keep the system safe and operating correctly. By utilizing the I2C serial data bus, the BQ40Z60EVM-578 is able to communicate with the system host, allowing configuration options and system message alerts, synchronizing with the GUI for access to full system information and setting customization.
