The BUL138 is an NPN type bipolar junction transistor (BJT) manufactured by Sanken Electric Company in Japan. It has a collector current of 35A and an hfe of 1200, allowing it to be used at high currents with very low voltage drops. It is a high speed device with a maximum frequency of 1GHz and a maximum collector dissipation of 100W.

As well as the very good electrical characteristics, the BUL138 has excellent mechanical characteristics, with a homogeneous structure which allows it to be used in a wide variety of applications. This makes it one of the most popular transistors for use in industrial applications.

The BUL138 works by a flow of electrons passing through the N-type material to the P-type material, passing through a wire or point-contact. This creates a junction at which the electrons can either pass between the two materials or become depleted. Depending on the current, one of the two will occur, allowing the transistor to operate as either an amplifier or a switch.

When the transistor is used as an amplifier, the current flow is limited by the voltage applied to the base, causing it to act as a variable resistor, looping it in either a high or low state depending on the applied voltage. This is known as active biasing, and it is this ability to vary the input voltage in order to control the current or voltage of the output that makes it so useful in amplifying audio and other signals.

When used as a switch, the current flow is slightly different. The voltage applied to the base must be greater than the voltage of the collector for the transistor to turn on. Once it is on, the current will continue to flow until the voltage at the base falls below the voltage of the collector. This is known as saturation and it allows for very efficient current control.
