Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) play an essential role in enabling digital systems to process analog signals. They act as a bridge between and analog and digital world, allowing analog signals to be translated into digital signals so that computer systems can process and use them. One of the most popular evaluation boards for digital analog conversion is DC1620A-T from Analog Devices. This board enables engineers to quickly and easily evaluate and develop analog-to-digital conversion systems.The DC1620A-T is an advanced 16-bit, 200 kS/s, monolithic analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which operates with supply voltages of +12V and -12V. It is designed to interface directly with digital logic and requires only external resistors and capacitors to make a complete converter system. It is able to convert an analog input within a range of ±3V to a 16-bit digital output code. The DC1620A-T contains two on-chip digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for generating reference voltages, an on-chip programmable gain amplifier (PGA), four internal sample-and-hold (S/H) amplifiers, and a TTL interface circuit. It provides a wide dynamic range that minimizes power supply requirements and allows the conversion of low-voltage analog signals. Additionally, the board uses a SAR architecture, an advanced patented architecture, to convert data from analog to digital in single cycle. The DC1620A-T offers a application field for many different applications such as CATV fiber-optic receiver systems, digital audio systems, PLC systems, digital communications systems, medical instrumentation and security systems, as well as many other industrial, military and commercial applications where high speed, low power consumption and high accuracy are critical factors.The first step in using the DC1620A-T board is to set the reference voltage. The reference voltage is the voltage that will be used as the reference for the level of the input signal for the ADC. This reference voltage can be adjusted using the on-board DACs or an external voltage source.Next, the gain needs to be set. The gain is the amount of amplification of the analog input signal before it is converted into a digital signal. This can be set using the on-board PGA or an external gain amplifier. Once the gain is set, the analog signal is ready to be applied to the ADC’s analog input.The last step is to use the on-board S/H amplifiers to sample the analog signal and then send the data to the ADC for conversion. This is done by first sampling the analog signal using the S/H amplifiers and then converting the sampled signal into a digital signal using the ADC. The digital signal is then outputted as a 16-bit digital output code.The DC1620A-T board is a powerful ADC that can be used to easily convert analog signals into digital signals. It is capable of providing high speed conversion with low power consumption and high accuracy, making it an ideal solution for many industrial, military and commercial applications. With the ability to adjust the gain and the reference voltage, as well as having four internal S/H amplifiers, the DC1620A-T board can be easily configured for optimal performance.
