The DC252A Evaluation Board from Active-Semi is a rugged and reliable AC/DC (off-line) switch mode power supply module for automotive and industrial applications, offering a wide range of features and track-out performance. The on-board control circuit implements a synchronous buck converter that can regulate the output voltage up to 25V and supports a wide range of input voltages from 12V to 50V. The output current is limited to 1.5A and can be programmed using the available onboard digital potentiometer.
The DC252A is designed with an exposed pad type power stage, making it simple and straightforward to assemble and provides a high degree of flexibility when it comes to the PCB component layout. The on-board voltage regulator protects the module from over-voltage and short-circuit conditions and together with the frequency fold back feature, serves to reduce the power dissipation during overload situations. Additionally, the board features an active/standby mode control input to minimize power consumption during standby periods, and an output current sense circuit for over-current protection. An additional control input is provided for Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) synchronization to an external clock.
The DC252A has several features and functions that make it suitable for a wide range of applications such as automotive chargers, motor control and industrial control systems. The working principle behind the DC252A is based on the synchronous buck converter topology. The board utilizes a buck topology that employs an inductor to convert the input AC voltage into a regulated DC output. This is done by switching a MOSFET with the on-board control circuit, thereby creating a pulsed current through the inductor. The MOSFET is driven by a PWM signal generated by the control circuit, which adjusts the duty cycle of the signal to control the output voltage of the module. A Low-Dropout (LDO) regulator is also used to provide a stable supply voltage to the control circuit.
The DC252A Evaluation Board provides an efficient solution for AC/DC (off-line) switch mode power supply designs. Its synchronous buck topology and on-board control circuit combine to offer excellent efficiency and Thermal Design Power (TDP) ratings, while the extended operating temperature range makes it well suited for automotive applications. The board’s low power dissipation and additional features such as an output current sensing circuit, an active/standby control input and PLL synchronization input provide additional flexibility when completing a design.
