DC2598A is an evaluation board based on the LTC3781, a feature-rich high-efficiency monolithic synchronous buck DC/DC controller IC from Linear Technology. It is a complete off-line AC/DC flyback SMPS solution and it delivers up to 25W of power.
The LTC3781 provides high-performance current mode control with an operating frequency up to 500 kHz. The switching frequency is adjustable with an on-chip multiposition frequency select input. Built-in soft-start and output overvoltage protection features in the LTC3781 help ensure reliable start-up and stability of the SMPS system. The LTC3781 can also be used in flyback topologies with an auxiliary winding, allowing steady state currents up to 3 A without an external sense resistor.
The DC2598A board is designed to operate from a universal input and includes an AC line filter, an isolation transformer, power switching circuitry, an opto-coupled feedback circuit, and an on-board voltage sense resistor. It can easily be adapted for AC/DC applications such as PC power supply, ITE, home appliance, consumer electronics and medical equipment.
The DC2598A can also be used for studying the operation of current mode control in buck converters. Adjustable resistors on the board allow the user to vary the value of the current sense resistor, the feedback voltage, the switching frequency, and many other parameters. This helps the user investigate the nonlinear behavior of the buck converter without the use of complex simulation software.
DC2598A works by converting the input voltage from the AC line to a regulated DC voltage to power the load. The input voltage is rectified and fed to the bulk capacitor with its own EMI filter. The secondary winding of the isolation transformer is connected to the optocoupler and passes the regulation signal back to the LTC3781.
The LTC3781 compares the regulation signal from the optocoupler to its own internal reference voltage and adjusts the duty cycle of the MOSFET driver accordingly in order to maintain a constant output voltage on the secondary side. The current mode control feature of the LTC3781 helps to achieve high efficiency, fast transient response and excellent load regulation.
The DC2598A is ideal for applications needing low power, high reliability and high efficiency. It features an adjustable switching frequency, overcurrent and overvoltage protection, as well as a built in soft start circuitry. The easy to use evaluation board makes it ideal for evaluating the performance of the LTC3781 in a variety of power supply designs. This makes it an excellent choice for engineers requiring a complete, off-line SMPS solution.
