The DS2778G+ (G+) is a programmable lithium-ion Li+ battery charge and fuel gauge IC that provides the circuitry necessary to monitor, protect, and control single-cell Li+ rechargeable batteries in portable electronic applications. The G+ is the latest device in a family of fuel gauge and protection devices from Dallas Semiconductor (now Maxim Integrated). It offers improved features, including charge current and voltage temperature compensation, extended discharge temperature range, reduced power consumption and protected data registers for enhanced product security.The G+ provides system designers with proven, accurate performance within a single package and simplifies the design of Li+ battery-powered applications. This product is exceptionally easy to use and allows a quick design cycle and time to market. With its simple analog and digital interfaces, the G+ is extremely flexible and configurable, making it suitable for use in a wide range of consumer, consumer/industrial and medical applications.The device provides complete protection for the single-cell Li+ battery, including cell overvoltage, cell undervoltage, over- and under-temperature, overcharge, and short circuit protection. The G+ implements a Charge State Protection mechanism to ensure that the battery is properly charged by controlling the current and voltage of the charger based on the safety parameters set by the user and charging profile. The current and voltage factors are monitored during charging and are compensated for temperature variation and cell resistance. The device also allows for asynchronous data communication between the host system and the charging system.Due to its safety features, the G+ is a key component for Li+ battery charging systems for mobile and portable devices. It is also widely used in medical devices and industrial systems. The device communicates with the host system using a UART protocol and can be used with charge controllers and ultra-low power MCUs.
