The DS2780E+ is a reliable, cost-effective and ultra low-power fuel gauge specifically designed for Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lithium-Polymer battery-powered applications. It offers all necessary features for safer and longer battery use, including one-wire communication, accurate monitoring and control of charging and discharging processes, time multiplexed ADC (TMADC), over voltage and over temperature protection, to name a few. This fuel gauge provides an efficient means to monitor a wide range of Li-Ion and Li-Polymer battery packs. Its advanced estimation algorithm is able to accurately estimate the remaining capacity in the most challenging operating conditions.
The DS2780E+ is designed for applications such as portable mobile phones, Mp3 players, digital cameras, notebook computers, and other battery powered devices. It also provides a capable solution for automotive and industrial applications, such as air-bag inflators and electric/hybrid vehicles.
This fuel gauge features an integrated high-accuracy fuel gauge based on charge transfer counter-based coulomb counting and proprietary Linear Coulomb Algorithm (LCA) algorithm which is used to monitor the battery life in terms of both time and capacity. The integrated time multiplexed-ADC (TMADC) is provided to read up to 8 external voltages and temperatures, while both ultracapacitor and fuel gauges support up to 16 cells per system in parallel architecture. This dual-channel fuel gauge offers quick recharge-work ability that counteracts battery chemistry effects and over-discharge protection.
The working principle of the DS2780E+ is based on proprietary Linear Coulomb Algorithm (LCA) technology which enables the fuel gauge to monitor battery discharging and charging processes more accurately. The proprietary LCA algorithm continuously monitors the battery’s state of charge and online fuel gauge performance, merging both primary coulomb counting with an estimation algorithm that takes into account time and temperature effects on the battery chemistry. This fuel gauge also features a unique time multiplexed-ADC which is able to read up to 8 external voltages and temperatures.
The DS2780E+ also offers a way to protect the battery from short circuit, overcharging, over-discharging, and overtemperature operation, as well as from other less common hazards, such as internal metal plating and aluminum foil failure. Additionally, the DS2780E+ fuel gauge supports a wide range of other features such as battery profile updates, self diagnostics, On-Chip Motor Drive Drivers, Muxed Senses, General-purpose I/Os, PreO2 and PostO2, LVC and QE functions, and thermistor-based battery temperature sensing.
The DS2780E+ is the ideal fuel gauge for Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer batteries, providing an advanced solution for ever growing battery applications such as personal electronics devices, industrial and automotive applications such as air-bag inflators and electric/hybrid vehicles. It offers all necessary features to monitor and control the battery health accurately, in order to guarantee safer and longer battery usage.
