Attenuators are broadly used for reducing the power of a signal without degrading its shape in transmission networks or communication systems. The HMC812LC4TR is a low cost, wideband analog variable attenuator integrated circuit (IC), offered in die form. It provides a accurate broadband attenuation control performance in the frequency range of DC to 6 GHz. This IC is developed using a BiCMOS process and comes with an optional normal or inverted attenuation control in increments of 0.5-1 dB.
Application Field
HMC812LC4TR allows for a wide variety of possibilities and requirements in wireless and cable applications, such as WiFi 802.11 a/b/e/g systems, cable TV systems, soft frequency hopping radios, single- or multiple-carrier transmitters. Its DC to 6 GHz range can be utilized with broadband amplifiers, modulators, transceivers, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, switched multi-section filterbanks, and various antenna systems.
Working Principle
The HMC812LC4TR is based on a PIN diode switch. It operates with an externally supplied control voltage (VCON) ranging from +2.7 V to +5.0 V. The RF signal is routed through the PIN ribbon switch and attenuation occurs in either a normal or inverted mode.
The attenuation of the HMC812LC4TR is determined by the control voltage (VCON). A relatively small change in the control voltage can provide a large shift in attenuation. The input signal is then passed on to the output stage where the signal is attenuated in either Normal or Inverted mode. The type of switching is determined by the logic value of the CS/INV input. The HMC812LC4TR provides active 0.5 to 1 dB attenuation steps with a maximum attenuation of 31.5 dB.
The HMC812LC4TR is designed with an internal temperature sensing circuit that compensates for temperature related shifts in attenuation over various temperature ranges. Also, this IC offers reverse isolation of > 30 dB and low active return loss of 10 dB and output power capability of +24 dBm.
The HMC812LC4TR is a robust IC ideal for applications that require accurate broadband attenuation control, such as broadband amplifiers, modulators, transceivers, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, switched multi-section filterbanks, and various antenna systems.
