IRG4BC15UD-STRL is type of IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) from Infineon with nominal current rating of 15A and $V_{CE}$ of 600V. This product belongs to the Single IGBT family which comprises of IGBTs with one SCR on the die. It is the ideal product for a cost-effective drive solution in medium-power range applications at switching frequency of up to 20 kHz.
Single IGBTs are beneficial in a variety of applications, such as, motor control, renewable energy, AC/DC power supplies, and industrial drives. IRG4BC15UD-STRL has been designed specifically for motor control applications such as three-phase motor control, electric vehicle traction, vector control drives and DC injection braking. As with other IGBTs, this product helps in reducing losses during inverter operation resulting in heightened efficiency and helps in achieving a high level of power quality with the addition of a PFC or an active front-end.
The IRG4BC15UD-STRL is built on a High-speed multichip concept, which optimizes the combination of parameters. It uses the same die for four transistors, resulting in less inductance and, therefore, in improved dv/dt capability for faster switching. Moreover, its features an integrated temperature sensor, which ensures an accurate temperature reading at any time.
The working principle of this IGBT starts when the gate who is isolated from the body of the transistor starts to draw current through an external resistor which generates voltage across the gate and drain junctions. The external voltage turns on a series of gates which then turns on more gates and the current between the source and the drain basically “flows” as if both P and N type materials of the transistor were connected in parallel. As the Gate voltage increases, the voltage across the source and the drain begins to decrease until it reaches 0V and saturates the transistor.
The switching of the IRG4BC15UD-STRL is performed in 4 steps: turn-on, short circuit, turn-off and free-wheeling. At turn-on, the transistor switches from off-state to on-state by increasing the gate-source voltage. During the short circuit, a high frequency current ripple is generated through the load. This fast rise of current is known as the “shoot-through” current. At turn-off, the transistor switches from on-state to off-state by decreasing the gate-source voltage. Finally, during the free-wheeling period, the current flow is delivered by two sources, the power supply and the body diode.
