The ISL6294IRZ-T is a switching-mode power supply battery charger made by Intersil, designed to charge Li-ion, Li-polymer, NiMH, NiCd and LiHV batteries. The device integrates two synchronous step-down/buck regulators and two linear post-regulation passives in a compact 6mm x 6mm, 48-lead TQFN package. This charger can operate from any available AC voltage from 100 VAC up to 240VAC at up to 3.2A combined adjustable current. The device can be used to charge monocell, dual-cell, or triple-cell batteries.

Working Principle

The ISL6294IRZ-T includes two synchronous step-down (buck) regulators in a single package, each incorporating power MOSFETs and a controller IC. The device is configured to charge one battery type at a time, either Li-ion, Li-polymer, NiMH, NiCd or LiHV. The device operates in a several modes, including constant voltage (CV), constant current (CC) and constant power (CP).

In the CC mode, the device charges the battery at a constant current, determined by the user. It then enters the CV mode, where the voltage is increased to the predetermined level. Once the desired voltage is reached, the device enters the CP mode and the voltage is held steady while the current slowly decreases. When the current drops to a low level, the device enters a trickle charge mode and shuts down.

The ISL6294IRZ-T also includes a range of safety features. These include overvoltage and undervoltage detection, overcurrent, overtemperature and short-circuit protection. Additionally, the device includes auto power-on detect as well as automatic cell number recognition.
