TVS - Diodes: LCE17 Application Field and Working Principle
TVS (transient voltage suppression) diodes are used to protect sensitive electronics against electrical transients such as surges, spikes, and ESD (electrostatic discharge). The LCE17 is a family of bi-directional transient suppressors designed for automotive applications that must meet the grade 2 requirements of AEC-Q101. The device has been qualified to handle automotive load dump pulses as well as other electrical disturbances up to 45V.
LCE17 diodes are available in different packages, such as Intelligent Power Modules (IPM), power-field effect transistors (P-FETs), and surface mount technology (SMT). The IPM package is intended for high current applications up to 75A, the P-FET package can handle up to 25A, and the SMT package can handle up to 15A.
The LCE17 works by clamping the voltage when the surge current exceeds the rated current of the device. The current will be clamped to the peak current (Ipp) of the device, typically between 1 and 2 amps. When this happens, the voltage will be reduced to a safe level, typically between 15 and 30 volts.
The LCE17 has several features that makes it suitable for use in automotive applications. The device is designed to have a fast response time, meaning that it can quickly clamp the voltage before damage occurs. It is also designed to have a low clamping voltage, which means it will not damage the protected components with its high clamping potential. The device is also designed to withstand high ambient temperatures, up to 145°C, and is vibration resistant.
In addition to its features, the LCE17 also has its own unique application field. It can be used in high performance hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), as well as hybrid electric buses (HEB). It can also be used in Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) to help protect the battery from over voltage and over current. Finally, it can be used in start-stop systems and inverter applications in automobiles.
In sum, LCE17 diodes are TVS (transient voltage suppression) devices designed for automotive use that meet the grade 2 of AEC-Q101 requirements. They are available in different packages, including IPM, P-FET and SMT, and are designed with features like fast response time, low clamping voltage and resistance to high ambient temperatures and vibration. The LCE17 can be used in a variety of automotive applications, such as HEV, HEB, PHEV, and in start-stop systems and inverters. It is an effective way of protecting sensitive electronics from damages associated with electrical transients.
