The LM5000-3MTC is a multi-topology, single channel, step-down switching regulator with a wide input voltage range. It is capable of producing an accurately regulated output voltage as low as 200mV and a maximum output current of 3A. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications including analog and digital power supplies, motor control, LED lighting and automotive applications. The switching regulator operates in one of three topologies, voltage mode, current mode or mode-doubling, allowing it to accurately regulate the output in all load conditions.

The switchmode regulator output depends on the input supply voltage, the inductance and the output voltage required. When the switch is closed, current flows through the inductor, creating an instantaneous current flow into its output capacitor, producing the required output voltage. Components such as the switch, inductor and output capacitor determine the operating frequency of the regulator. When the voltage control loop senses that the output voltage is reaching the desired level, it switches the switch open, causing current flowing through the inductor to be collapsed as it tries to power the load.
