The LM5020 device is a high-performance, digitally enhanced families of offline SMPS (switch mode power supply) controllers from Texas Instruments. These controllers are widely utilized for AC/DC and DC/DC applications to regulate the output voltage at any selected level. The LM5020 Evaluation Board is designed to facilitate easy testing and evaluation of the LM5020 feature set and its applications. This article covers field of usage and working principle of the LM5020 Evaluation Board.
Field of Usage:
The LM5020 Evaluation Boards allow users to evaluate and test the LM5020-Q1 and LM5020A-Q1 for various DC/DC and AC/DC applications. These boards are capable of efficiently driving buck, boost, flyback and forward converters with current or voltage mode control. The Boards are pre-configured with various application configurations suitable for common offline switching power supply topologies. To facilitate user application requirements, the boards also provide connectors for external components such as inductors, capacitors, diodes etc. for easy customizing of the power supply.
Moreover, users get the ability to evaluate the shift in current peak ahead, current sensing accuracy as well as selectable slope compensation on capacitive load with the boards. The boards also provide scope access pins and a daughter board connectors to connect to oscilloscope to view waveforms.
Working Principle:
The LM5020 Evaluation Board uses a current sensing and controlling circuitry to regulate and control the voltage on the output stage. The input voltage to the board is connected to the SW node and the output voltage is connected to the FB node. This input voltage generates a current via the control switching loop (Option 1D), TB2 and D1. This current is sensed by the MOSFET current sensing resistor which is connected in the control loop. This sensed current is then amplified in the error amplifier (U1) and is compared to the external reference voltage (VREF-FB). The output of this error amplifier is inputted to the current control logic as well as the slide compensation circuit.
Then the output of the error amplifier is compared to the current control logic which then generates control signals such as Peak Ahead and Turn on signals to the gate driver. The slide compensation circuit compares the sensed peak current error voltage and the output voltage error voltage and provides compensation to the error amplifier output if the output voltage error is greater. This slide compensation helps in improving the response of the control loop.
Once the control loop is formed with the required control and slope compensation parameters, a stable output voltage is obtained across the output stage.
The LM5020 Evaluation Board is a versatile tool for optimizing and evaluating various offline SMPS applications.
