The LM5025AEVAL is a fully integrated product composed of an evaluation board and a companion controller IC optimized for low cost, high power off-line switching power supply applications. It combines a high performance isolated, low RDS(ON) gate driver, high performance non-inverting buck regulator, gate protection, and built-in automatic fault protection (AFP) functions. Due to its wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 35V, both flyback and forward converters could be achieved up to 25W power levels.

The LM5025AEVAL evaluation board includes a 400V MOSFET, opto-coupler, current sense resistor, and sinusoidal filter capacitor, which made it a complete ready-to-use demo board to easily evaluate the system performance. Various jumpers are provided to easily customize each function and to develop an end-application. The user can feel free to change the MOSFET, select the operating mode, adjust the current limit, and the soft-start time.

The LM5025A on-board controller has two operating modes to choose from. The voltage mode control, which is a classical PWM control with volt feedback, is suitable for low output power applications while the current mode control is aimed for high power applications. The on-board opto-couplers are used as primary side feedback control and provide isolation of up to 1500Vdc for safety purposes.

To further increase the flexibility and performance of the system, the LM5025A includes two adjustments for the external MOSFET gate voltage and two external resistor networks to control the external light load behaviour and the minimum on-time of the FET. Higher power systems with higher operating frequency could benefit from adding an external N-channel MOSFET as a synchronous FET for improved efficiency.

The LM5025AEVAL also offers automatic fault protection functions for both open loop and current limit protection that will provide extra protection to the system. The fault functions will shut down the supply with a minimum delay when fault conditions occur. The evaluation board also includes a power good (PG) signal that is available from a jumper mounted LED on the board.
