The LM5025BSD/NOPB is a high-frequency, synchronous, buck-boost, DC-DC switching controller. The device allows positive and negative output voltages from an input voltage that is higher than, equal to, or lower than the output voltage. The LM5025 is capable of regulating voltages as low as 0.5 V,and has been specifically designed for applications where very low dropout of the output voltage is required.

The primary function of the LM5025 is to control a power N-channel MOSFET. A slow start up circuit shuts off the MOSFET at the beginning of each cycle, allowing the voltage of the output to reach its programmed level, and then turns it on while maintaining the constant voltage level. In this way, the output voltage remains stable when the input voltage varies—synchronously with the cycle. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode is available to reduce input current with light/medium-load conditions, making the LM5025 an ideal choice for high efficiency systems.

The LM5025BSD/NOPB is suitable for many applications, including battery-operated systems, DC-DC power supplies, point-of-load converters, current-mode regulators, DC-DC converters and overvoltage/undervoltage protection systems. It also comes with a PGOOD output and adjustable undervoltage lockout. The device has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.

The LM5025BSD/NOPB includes an error amplifier, frequency compensation, and a current sense amplifier. The error amplifier provides high gain and is used to compare the feedback voltage with the reference voltage. This comparison controls the level of the next stage, which acts as a peak current detector, and is used to set the peak current level of the power MOSFET. The frequency compensation is included to ensure stable loop performance over a wide range of operating conditions.

The current sense input of the device is used to monitor the current being switched by the power MOSFET. This sensing current is derived from the inductor current, which is proportional to the load current. The inductor current is buffered by an internal current sense amplifier, which has a gain of 20, to form the sensed current.

The PGOOD output of the LM5025 signals the presence of a valid output voltage. When the voltage is valid, the output is asserted, otherwise it is de-asserted. This output can be used by a microprocessor or other system control logic to monitor and control the output voltage. The device also includes Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO) and an adjustable Soft-start circuit to limit the inrush current of the power MOSFET.
