LM5073 is a high voltage integrated circuit (HVIC) designed for use in synchronous primary side regulator (PSR) systems. It integrates voltage and current sensing functions as well as a programmability for line and load regulation. It also has an integrated MOSFET driver and eliminates the need for an optocoupler. The LM5073EVAL evaluation board provides a platform for evaluating the features and performance of the LM5073 HVIC in a fully operational system.
The application field of the LM5073EVAL evaluation board is in DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS. It finds uses in a range of applications including LED Driver, Offline, Telecom AC/DC Power Supply, Off-line Switch Mode Power Supply, PFC (Power Factor Correction) and Transition Mode Power Supply.
Working Principle
The working principle of the LM5073EVAL evaluation board is based on primary side sensing (PSS). It uses a simple pickup coil connected in series with the line voltage to sense the input voltage. This line voltage is converted to the output regulated voltage by the PSR, and the output voltage and current is sensed by the LM5073. The voltage and current sensing signals are then fed to the HVIC which is designed to regulate the output voltage. The LM5073 uses a built-in driver to drive a power MOSFET in order to control the output voltage.
In order to program the output voltage regulation parameters of the evaluation board, a potentiometer (RV1) is used. This potentiometer can be used to adjust the voltage setpoint of the board and to select either the standard fixed amplitude mode of operation or the analog linear mode of operation. A jumper (JP1) is also used to select the frequency of the pulse width modulation (PWM) signal and a selector switch (SW5) is used to select various modes of operation.
The LM5073 is designed to reduce switching losses by controlling the overload condition in such a way that the stress on the switching devices is minimized. It also features short-circuit protection thus improving the robustness of the system. The LM5073 also has an integrated current sharing feature which allows two or more power supplies to share a common load without losses caused by unequal currents.
The LM5073EVAL evaluation board is very suitable for evaluating the features and performance of the LM5073 HVIC for a range of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS applications. It enables designers to quickly and easily set up and experiment with the latest high voltage technology used in synchronous primary side regulation.
