The LM50CIM3/NOPB is a temperature sensor that uses an analog and digital output to measure the temperature of a specified environment, with a temperature range of -40°C - +105°C or -40°F - +221°F. The device is an integrated thermistor and is composed of a voltage transducer, an amplifier and an analog-to-digital converter. The employment of this device involves making use of its conveniently integrated components. In its simplest application, the LM50CIM3/NOPB acts as a temperature sensing element. The digital output is then read either by an analog I/O pin of a microcontroller or directly into a serial interface, such as I2C, SPI or UART. The microcontroller or serial interface then interprets the LM50CIM3/NOPB’s digital output according to the protocol it is setup to receive, and the temperature measured is then indicated to the user.

Alternatively, the device could also be employed to act as a temperature compensation element. Temperature sensors typically have an offset voltage, where this voltage may vary by temperature. The LM50CIM3/NOPB compensates for this, as its integrated amplifier can be used to adjust this offset using the I2C interface. This technique allows for temperature compensation to be read directly off-chip, eliminating the need to burden a microcontroller’s resources.

The LM50CIM3/NOPB can also be used as a temperature warning device. When a threshold temperature is reached, the warning output pin, INT, is activated, indicating the output threshold has been crossed. This pin can be connected directly to an interrupt line of a microcontroller, allowing for immediate action to be taken with the exceeding of the threshold temperature.

Given its upper and lower temperature limits, wide input voltage range, accuracy, and ease of use, the LM50CIM3/NOPB is widely used for temperature sensing, temperature compensation and temperature warning in industrial as well as consumer electronics applications.
