Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are conventional and highly versatile ICs (integrated circuit), that offer complete integrated solutions for power management. PMICs typically consist of multiple blocks, each featuring specific characteristics designed to meet the application’s power requirements. PMICs are divided into eight main categories: DC-DC converters, linear regulators, sequencers, monitoring, lighting, hot swap circuits, battery chargers and gate drivers. The LM5101BMA/NOPB is an integrated circuit belonging to the latter, gate driver category.

A gate driver is a power amplifier that accepts a low-power signal, usually a logical one, and produces an output signal which is suitable for driving a load, usually power transistors, such as Field Effect transistors (FETs) and Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs). An efficient, and most importantly, reliable gate driver is a key component in high-speed switching power converters.

The LM5101BMA/NOPB is an example of a two channel, high side, gate driver IC with a typical 1.5A peak and 0.5A continuous drive, respectively. This IC is designed to address the many challenging dead-time and shoot-through protection requirements of modern high-frequency and high-efficiency synchronous power converters. It provides adaptive dead-time control and shoot-through protection to optimize control of the power switches, improving efficiency and robustness of the system. This IC is highly versatile, as it has selectable inputs for both dedicated TTL/LVDS and logic-level signals, as well as various logical levels for driving power MOSFETs and IGBTs.

From a more practical perspective, the LM5101BMA/NOPB requires a 6V to 16V Vin (DC input voltage) supply and a 10V to 14V Vbst (bootstrap voltage) to enable the output high-side driver. The enable pins allow the user to enable or disable each of the high or low-side outputs. Furthermore, it features a fault and force outputs, allowing control of external circuits, and a robust ESD protection (min. ±15kV HBM).

As far as the actual working principle of the LM5101BMA/NOPB, it is quite straightforward. This IC implements pulse grating, a technique that consists of monitoring the duty cycle of the input signals and selectively applying a duty cycle to those. This duty cycle will be switching high-side and low-side MOSFETs to drive the output voltage. The LM5101BMA/NOPB implements an additional fault-protection logic for over–current, overtemperature, stress overload and fault/force control. This prevents the IC from functioning when these conditions occur, protecting the system from possible damage.

The LM5101BMA/NOPB application field lies mostly in synchronous buck converters, motor drivers, flyback converters and portable devices. This IC allows the user to reduce their implementation time and ensure the robustness of the implementation, offering superior protection for the power stages. Still, some of the main characteristics, such as a low-side drive current and a high-side voltage rating of 2.2V to Vbs+, limit the application of this IC, meaning that they are not suitable for mosfet gate drive microinverters.
