Working Principle

The LM5161PWPT is a DC-DC switching regulator based on a synchronous PWM control principle. It employs a current-mode control system and a control loop to regulate the output voltage. As shown in the block diagram, the current-mode control circuit is composed of error amplifier, oscillator, ramp generator and comparators.

The error amplifier senses the output voltage and compares it to a generated reference voltage and adjusts the output voltage accordingly. The oscillator sets the switching frequency by providing the sawtooth waveform to the PWM comparator. The comparators compare the error amplifier output voltage, ramp waveform, and the booster clock waveform to generate the gate drive signals for the high side and the low side MOSFETs. The booster clock waveform is used to compensate for gate capacitance differences between the high side and the low side MOSFETs.

The MOSFETs are optimally driven by a 6.5A, 3A peak low-side MOSFET driver. This provides good efficiency and fast transient response while minimizing shoot-through current. The LM5161PWPT can be operated in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) as well as in synchronous mode (SM) to maximize efficiency. The current-mode control ensures a fast load enveloping characteristic. The functional features of the LM5161PWPT are protected by an over temperature, over current, and under voltages lockout feature.
