LM5119PSQE/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM5119PSQE/NOPB device is a P-channel buck synchronous controller designed for highest-accuracy, peak-power-tracking, synchronous step-down regulator. The device operates at frequencies up to 1 MHz, and operates with external P-channel MOSFETs and PNP transistors to achieve the highest speeds and lowest costs. The LM5119PSQE/NOPB supports two modes of operation—high-evolution rate tracking mode (HERE) and fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM).

LM5119PSQE/NOPB is used in high-efficiency, low-cost power-conversion systems, such as power supplies, battery-charger systems, and automotive systems requiring peak current tracking in low-power requirements. The device is especially well suited for battery-charger applications requiring rapid, accurate current-limiting. The high-evolution rate tracking mode provides fast transient response and tight current regulation. The device also provides short-circuit protection, output voltage ramping, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, thermal protection, enabling, and main voltage mode selection.

Working Principle:

The LM5119PSQE/NOPB is a highly accurate, peak-power-tracking, voltage regulator. It provides peak-current tracking, fast transient response and tight current regulation, while allowing accurate peak current limit control and an efficient power supply. It uses a high-evolution rate tracking (HERE) mode of control to achieve fast transient response and tight current regulation. It also supports fixed-frequency PWM mode control.

The HERE mode uses a high-speed adaptive control loop which accurately tracks peak current. The duty cycle and frequency of the PWM signal can be externally adjusted, allowing the user to precisely control the peak current source/sink, and maintain constant peak current under various load conditions. The fixed-frequency PWM mode provides a constant switching frequency and optimized frequency and pulse width parameters to direct the peak current tracking.

Additionally, the LM5119PSQE/NOPB offers short-circuit protection, output voltage ramping, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection and thermal protection. Its built-in overcurrent protection and soft-start/stop circuitry adds additional safety, and makes it ideal for automotive, portable and high-voltage applications. The device is packaged in a SOIC-8 package that is both small in size and suitable for high-volume applications.
