Working Principle

LM5166DRCR is a PWM buck switching regulator designed for a wide range of input voltage applications. The input voltage is regulated in proportion to the output voltage. This circuit is composed of a reference voltage generator, a power stage, and a current sensing circuit. During operation, a reference voltage is produced directly from the output signal to drive the error amplifiers. In addition, pulse width modulation is used to drive the N-channel MOSFET to bypass the input voltage to the output in proportion to the output voltage that is being regulated.

The regulator includes an on-chip current sense amplifier that senses the current in the high-side MOSFET. The current signal is fed to the current limit loop and the thermal shutdown circuit. This sense amplifier also senses the current in the low-side MOSFET and triggers an external latch circuit to turn off the regulator if the load current exceeds the load current limit.

The regulator includes an internal compensation loop generator to provide good overall system performance, including fast droop response and low EMI. It also features a slew-rate controlled output, programmable output voltage and temperature sensing for use in high output power, high efficiency applications.

The LM5166DRCR is protected from overvoltage, short-circuit, and over-temperature conditions using external protection structures. The regulator also includes an enable pin that can be used to put the regulator into a shut-down mode, allowing the user to turn off the device without disconnecting it from the system.
