LX2205ILQ Application Field and Working Principle Power management integrated circuits (or PMICs) are specialized integrated circuits that manage the delivery of power to a system. PMICs have different functions, such as battery chargers, voltage regulators, or motor drivers. One of these PMICs is the LX2205ILQ. This integrated circuits is part of the family of battery charger PMICs and is designed to provide a constant, safe and efficient charge for a wide range of battery types, including Li-ion, Li-Polymer, Ni-MH, Ni-Cd and lead-acid.
LX2205 Functions and Features The LX2205ILQ is an integrated DC-DC converter plus linear charger in a 10-pin MLP package. The output voltage range is adjustable from 4.25V to 17V and the charging current range is from 75mA to 5A. The PMIC automatically detects the battery connection and configures its settings to begin charging.
Working Principles The LX2205ILQ uses two main stages to control the power delivery to a battery: the DC-DC converter and the linear charger. Both stages are independently controlled. The purpose of the DC-DC converter stage is to obtain the reference voltage for the linear charger, varying its output voltage to fit the charging requirements of the target battery. The linear charger is composed of an error amplifier and a current sense amplifier. The error amplifier amplifies the error between the reference voltage and an internal voltage reference to control the charging current. This constant current then flows through the current sense amplifier to regulate the output voltage of the charger in order to limit the output current and protect the battery from overcharging. The PMIC\'s internal oscillator serves the dual-purpose of providing a stable clock base that enables the IC to accurately regulate the battery charging process, while also providing EMI reduction through frequency hopping. This oscillator is placed in between the linear charger and DC-DC converter stages so that it can control the regulation of the two stages independently.
