Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors, like all capacitors, are energy storage devices that allow electric charge to flow between two plates separated by an insulator. An M39003/01-2632/TR is a type of tantalum capacitor that has been specifically designed for high frequency applications, such as those found in military and industrial, aerospace and marine applications. The M39003/01-2632/TR is a surface mounted, hermetically sealed tantalum capacitor with radial leads. It is a non-solid alkaline electro-chemical capacitor with a leaded case. The casing is made from a blend of epoxy and polyphenylene-sulfide thermoplastic, which makes it resistant to corrosion and elevated temperatures.The M39003/01-2632/TR tantalum capacitor works according to principle of an electro-chemical capacitor. The capacitor consists of an anode and a cathode, with an electrolyte or dielectric material based on tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) between them. When voltage is applied, the anode produces a positive charge and the cathode a negative charge. Through the action of the dielectric material, the opposite charges attract each other and electric charge is stored between them. The M39003/01-2632/TR features a dielectric material based on tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), which has a high volumetric energy density and an industry leading low self-discharge rate, often less than 5%. This dielectric material also has excellent stability in rugged environment when exposed to harsh temperatures, high humidity, and extreme surface mount soldering conditions, making it a better choice for high frequency circuit applications than other types of capacitors.The capacitor provides a high-temperature rated wide range of capacitances, ranging from 1uF to 680uF. It also features a wide operating voltage range with ratings as high as 37Vdc, and a low ESR (equivalent series resistance). This makes the M39003/01-2632/TR not only suitable for its originally designed high frequency applications, but also for applications where a low ESR is critical, such as switching mode power supplies and large current DC/DC converters. The M39003/01-2632/TR tantalum capacitor also features a broad range of power indices, with currents as high as 62Amps. This makes it an ideal solution for power supplies, where both energy storage and current delivery are required. Moreover, it has a very high volumetric efficiency, with capacitance values up to 1.3microfarads per square inch. In summary, the M39003/01-2632/TR is an ideal capacitor for many high frequency and power supply applications. Its hermetically sealed case allows it to withstand temperature extremes, its wide operating voltage range and low self-discharge rate makes it able to handle power index applications. Its dielectric material based on tantalum pentoxide provides excellent stability to rugged environment and makes it suitable for applications where low ESRs are critical. Finally, its high volumetric efficiency ensures that it can provide the necessary capacitance in a compact unit.
