Working Principle of M39003/01-7204/PR Capacitors

The M39003/01-7204/PR capacitors employ a dielectric of sintered tantalum powder, a dielectric material possessing excellent insulation and thermal conductivity. The sintered material is then placed between two metal electrodes which are connected to the outside of the capacitor. An internal resistor is also included to reduce the effects of voltage and current surges.The two metal electrodes act as either a positive or negative plate of a capacitor. The dielectric material allows a current to flow through the capacitor when a voltage is applied to the plates. When the applied voltage exceeds a certain threshold, known as the dielectric breakdown voltage, the dielectric material begins to break down and an arc is formed. This arc causes the metal plates to heat up, which can eventually cause the capacitor to fail. The inclusion of the internal resistor helps to reduce the amount of current flowing through the capacitor and, therefore, decreases the chance of failure due to an arc forming.In addition to the internal resistor, M39003/01-7204/PR capacitors also employ a film type construction.
