Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors are another form of electrolytic capacitor, however, instead of using an aluminum anode it uses a sheet of tantalum foil etched with the same design as the aluminum foil. As tantalum is a highly reactive form of material, it oxidizes when exposed to an electrolyte forming a layer of oxide on its surface. This layer of oxide proves to be ideal in allowing charge to be stored in the capacitor and quickly released when necessary. Tantalum capacitors are preferred by many due to their small size and the ability to handle high-current, low-impedance conditions. They are also capable of handling high-frequency operations and possess high stability and reliability.
M39003/01-5648 Application Field and Working Principle
The M39003/01-5648 tantalum capacitor is a molded surface-mount box capacitor and is ideally used in applications where high temperature performance and stability are needed such as in aerospace, military, and commercial/industrial applications. The capacitor is rated for 100Vdc, 5uF, and ±22% tolerance with a working temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. The M39003/01-5648 utilizes a solid tantalum anode with a MnO2 wet electrolyte, contained in the hermetic seal packaging, to provide the stability and reliability that is required for many industrial and military applications.Before the capacitor is used it needs to be properly pre-conditioned or activated in order to activate the MnO2 wet electrolyte. This involves cycling the capacitors voltage between the rated value for a specified time. This process forms a reliable electrical path through the MnO2 and stabilizes the capacitive effects. After this the capacitor will reach its full capacitance.In use, the capacitor’s anode is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply and the tantalum’s cathode is connected to the negative terminal. As electricity passes through the capacitor, a layer of oxide is formed on the surface of the anode. This layer of oxide allows electrons to move quickly through the capacitor thus creating charge within. This charge is released as electricity passes through the capacitor.
