Tantalum Capacitors

The M39003/01-6160/HSD is a type of tantalum capacitor. It is a dipped, molded construction capacitor with three terminals and utilizes capacitance using annealed MnO2 as the dielectric. This is a quite a valuable component for devices such as radar, remote sensing, air craft navigation equipment, and communications.

Tantalum capacitors are mainly divided into two categories: molded type and dipped type. The M39003/01-6160/HSD is part of the dipped type with a configuration of three terminals. It is constructed of an anode, cathode lead, and code terminal, and is often mounted using standard through-hole soldering techniques. For non-polarized versions, the anode lead must be connected to the correct polarity.

The capacitive element of this capacitor has a thickness of 0.25mm and capacitance range between 10 and 47 µF. The operating temperature range is between -55°C and 125°C with a rated voltage of 16V. It has an operating life of 2,100 hours at 125°C and 85%, with an impedance ESR as low as 4.7 ohms.

M39003/01-6160/HSD capacitors use tantalum as an anodized material, while the cathode is formed with a lead Wire and a MnO₂ dielectric. The anodized tantalum powder is compounded with a binder and is placed in a hollow hole in the cup-shaped casing. The outer surface and cavity are then filled with a MnO₂ dielectric paste which gives off a white color. When electric current is used to polarize, the anodized tantalum plate at the anode reacts and molecules of metal are formed. The electrons of the metal plate diffuse to the cathode lead forming a film that is connected to the plate.

The cathode lead and MnO₂ dielectric inside the capacitor forms the capacitance. The voltage is stored in the capacitance and the series resistance between the anode and cathode lead is used to produce a time constant to set the time for discharging the internal capacitance. The self-induced electric field generated by the electric current on the anode lead causes the chemical reaction to generate MnO₂ film on the anodized powder.

In theory, the MN02 dielectric is a perfect insulator, and therefore an ideal choice for a capacitor. However, in reality, the dielectric is a semiconductor. Therefore, the capacitance is slightly lower than that of a perfect insulator. A tantalum capacitor also suffers from leakage current due to the semiconductor nature of the dielectric, and therefore its capacitance must be periodically tested to maintain accuracy.

M39003/01-6160/HSD can be used in fields such as avionics systems, communications, and radar. In addition, due to its lower leakage current and high reliability, it can be used in applications which require components with high energy efficiency and long operating life. Furthermore, due to its ability to withstand high temperatures, it is also an ideal choice for high temperature applications.
