Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitors that are distinguished by their great capacitance per unit volume. They are available in two types: tantalum oxide capacitors and tantalum wet capacitors. While both types have different uses, they operate in a similar manner in both their construction and their working principles.

M39003/01-6163 Application Field and Working Principle

The M39003/01-6163 is an example of a tantalum capacitor. It is a miniaturized, hermetically sealed tantalum capacitor in a molded encapsulated package. It is designed to meet a wide variety of applications, including high-frequency and low-frequency power circuits, switch-mode power supplies, high current load, and signal conditioning.

The M39003/01-6163 uses a combination of tantalum and an organic electrolyte to form the capacitor. The structure of the capacitor consists of two conductors, formed by extremely thin layers of tantalum, which are separated by a “dielectric”, an insulating material which acts as a barrier between them. A layer of electrolyte is spread over the dielectric, contacting the two conductors.

Once the capacitor is connected to a direct current (DC) power supply, the positive terminal of the power supply is connected to one of the conductors and the negative terminal is connected to the other. The electrolyte is then saturated with anions, which are negatively charged ions, and cations, which are positively charged ions. The charge created by these ions is stored in the dielectric.

When AC current is applied to the capacitor, the anions and cations move towards the alternating current and the capacitor develops its capacitance. As the alternating current moves, so too does the charge, and the capacitor works like a battery, releasing and storing energy in an alternating current. The capacitance of the capacitor is a measure of the amount of energy it stores and releases as the current passes through it.

This process is used to filter out higher frequencies on analog systems, as well as for noise suppression on digital systems. By filtering out these higher frequencies, it reduces interference from other electrical signals. The capacitance of the capacitor also helps to control the power output of an electrical circuit.

The M39003/01-6163 tantalum capacitor has a direct current (DC) rating of 10 volts and a pulse rating of 12 volts. It has a capacitance of 47µF (microfarads) and is constructed with a low effective series inductance (ESL). It has excellent reliability, stability, and low ESR and is suitable for use in a wide range of applications.
