Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are an important type of electronic component that can be used in a wide range of applications. An example of such a component is M39003/01-7227/TR, which is a surface-mount tantalum capacitor with a voltage rating of 7.5V and a capacitance of 27µF.

Tantalum capacitors are made with a solid dielectric, commonly either tantalum metal oxide or niobium oxide, and two electrodes, one of which is inserted into the dielectric material and the other of which acts as the outer terminal for connection with external circuits. They can also be used in high surge applications, such as in switched mode power supplies.

Working principle

The operating principle of a tantalum capacitor is based on the simple capacitive reactance expressed mathematically. The electrical current flow between the two plates of the capacitor is controlled by the amount of charge stored on each of the two plates. As the amount of charge increases, the current between the two plates decreases. This characteristic is referred to as capacitive reactance or impedance.

When the capacitor is connected to a voltage source, a changing electric field is created within the tantalum dielectric and it forms a path for electrons. As the electric field changes, it creates an electromagnetic field around the dielectric and it causes a current to flow through the two plates. This current is what forms the capacitor’s capacitance. As the electric field changes, the current flow and the capacitance of the capacitor also changes.

Tantalum capacitors are well-suited for high-voltage and high-current applications. The voltage rating of the M39003/01-7227/TR can reach 7.5V and its capacitance can reach 27µF. Its excellent performance and reliability have made it widely used in the military, aerospace, and medical industries.
