Tantalum Capacitors: M39003/03-0268/HSD Application Field and Working Principle

The M39003/03-0268/HSD series employs the use of manganese dioxide as its dielectric material, which serves as the bridge between the two electrodes inside the capacitor. This specific application field is suitable for those circuits in which both high voltage and high temperature application is present simultaneously.

The working principle of users should be well aware of such kind of capacitors before using because they are much different than the conventional ceramic capacitors or aluminum electrolytic capacitors. When positive voltage is applied to the lead of a tantalum capacitor, an anodic film is created on its surface.

The anodic film is formed by the following reaction: oxygen + metal = metal oxide. This thin film thus forms a dielectric layer between the two electrodes. This enables the capacitor to store a certain amount of electric charge in it. This stored charge however can be discharged only when the ac voltage is higher than the dc voltage.
