Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are widely used in various applications due to their high reliability and significant performance benefits over their traditional counterparts. The M39003/03-2009/HSD series of capacitors are specifically designed to meet the challenging requirements of high temperature, high voltage applications.

Application Field

M39003/03-2009/HSD devices are suitable for a variety of applications, including automotive, aerospace, power conditioning, and military equipment. The extended temperature range of -55°C to +125°C (-67°F to +257°F), in combination with high voltage ratings up to 50Vdc, make these capacitors an excellent choice for applications that require high reliability and long-term performance.

These capacitors are also well suited for high-temperature environments, such as in hybrid vehicles. Additionally, due to their exceptional frequency response properties, the M39003/03-2009/HSD devices are ideal for power conditioning applications such as dc-dc converters.

Working Principle

The M39003/03-2009/HSD capacitor is a polarized electrolytic capacitor with a tantalum anode and a solid manganese dioxide (MnO2) cathode. When the capacitor is charged, the tantalum oxide layer which forms on the anode passivates and stabilizes the surface. This layer helps protect the capacitor against oxidation and corrosion while also improving its long-term reliability.

The MnO2 cathode is an electrical conductor like a metal. Its structure, however, is much more complex and is composed of different oxides and hydrous oxides. It stores energy as an electric field which is generated when charges move through the space between the cathode and anode.

The combined layers of tantalum oxide and MnO2 form a capacitive structure. This structure can store an electric charge when the available voltage across the capacitor is higher than the voltage drop caused by the dielectric layer. The capacitor is reverse charged when the voltage across it is lower than the dielectric voltage drop.

Capacitors manufactured with this technology are highly reliable and have extended life cycles due to the high temperature properties and long-term stability of the MnO2 cathode.
