M39003/03-2055, part of the Military Specification (MIL-T-39003) range of standard tantulum capacitors, is designed for military and aerospace applications. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, the electric field moves the electrons in the outer plate, causing a change in electric charge. The same principle works in reverse; when a voltage is removed, the electric field between the capacitor plates causes electrons to flow from the outer plate, thus releasing the electric charge.

To manufacture M39003/03-2055 capacitors, a layer of oxide coating is applied to the tantalum metal electrodes.
