Tantalum capacitors, also known as Ta Caps or tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are one of the most widely used types of capacitors in Electronics. These kinds of capacitors are constructed with a tantalum powder electrode as the anode, a metal oxide as the dielectric, and an electrolyte. Tantalum capacitors are characterized by their very high capacitance and relatively low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) compared to other types of capacitors. They are used in a variety of applications, such as power supplies, switching circuits, and signal filtering.

The M39003/09-0162 is a tantalum capacitor designed to provide effective noise filtering capabilities. It is a miniaturized capacitor that is capable of supplying up to 10V in a wide range of temperatures. The M39003/09-0162 has a low leakage current, has low tan δ and is thus well suited for applications such as coupling/decoupling, signal bypass, suppression of surge voltages and also in RF circuits. The capacitor also has a relatively low equivalent series resistance (ESR) compared to other types of capacitors.

Because it is a compact capacitor, it can be used even in space-constrained applications. The capacitance value can range from 100µF to 1000µF, depending on the application. The capacitor also has very low internal resistance, making it suitable for use in high current applications. The M39003/09-0162 also has low dissipation factor, high ripple current ratings, high capacitance stability over DC bias and low ESR. The capacitor can withstand temperatures up to 150°C.

The working principle of the M39003/09-0162 is similar to other tantalum capacitors. It utilizes a tatalum powder electrode as the anode and an electrolyte as the source of the dielectric. The anode of the capacitator is electrically isolated from the cathode by a metal oxide dielectric. Upon a voltage differential applied across the capacitator, the electrons from the anode are drawn towards the cathode which increases the count of electrons in the anode resulting in a corresponding increase of electric field in the dielectric medium.

The electric field produced by the increase in electron count causes the molecules of the dielectric to align themselves oppositely in a pattern known as polarization, resulting in the creation of a static electric charge on the surface of the dielectric medium. The static electric charge acts as a barrier between the anode and the cathode of the capacitator, thus storing electrical energy in the form of an electric field.

When the applied voltage is removed, the electrons gradually return to the anode, reducing the electric field. This releases the stored energy, thus making the capacitor discharge. This cycle is repeated whenever the capacitor is subjected to a voltage differential, enabling it to store and release electrical energy even in very small time intervals.

The M39003/09-0162 capacitor is used in applications such as power supplies, switching circuits, RF signals, signal bypass and voltage regulatory circuits. It is especially suitable for use in high temperature, high frequency and high AC ripple current applications. It is a compact and reliable solution for capacitance requirements in a variety of electronic systems.
