Tantalum capacitors are primarily used in high-current densely packed electronic circuits. They are favored for their low ESR, high capacitance and rated ripple currents compared to other capacitor types. The M39006/22-0400 is an example of a tantalum capacitor designed for military applications which can primarily be used to filter out transient voltages, smooth out input and output DC voltages, and store energy for boost and buck converters.

The M39006/22-0400 is a T-level, molded, hermetically sealed and epoxied, axial leaded, tantalum capacitor. It is an ultra-miniature radial leaded version with radial epoxy over leads. This capacitor is radial form in design which means that the capacitor leads are mounted at the side of the capacitor body. The miniature Tantalum Capacitors have the same advantages as any other capacitor; they offer excellent reversal characteristics; excellent temperature stability and voltage coefficient; and better dielectric absorption than smaller polyester capacitors. The distinct feature of this capacitor is that it is hermetically sealed, and helps to protect the capacitor from degassing, end of life failures, and moisture susceptibility.

The primary application of the M39006/22-0400 capacitor is in military and space projects. The hermetic seal makes the capacitor capable of withstanding much higher temperatures than normal capacitors when exposed to high temperature environments such as the ones found in missile and rocket payloads. The capacitor also offers high ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and voltage coefficients, which makes it ideal for filtering out transient voltages. This capacitor is also well-suited for being used in pulse detectors, oscillators, filters, regulated power supplies and low-noise systems of military and aerospace electronic equipment.

The M39006/22-0400 capacitor works on the principle of capacitor charging and discharging, as explained by mathematical equations. A capacitor is essentially two flat plates separated by a dielectric material, such as air, paper, plastic or ceramic. When an electric current is applied to one side of the capacitor, the electrons move towards the other side due to the attractive force between them. Since the electrons cannot cross the dielectric, they accumulate on the other side and create a charge imbalance across the capacitor plates. The capacitor charges at a rate determined by the equation of RC (resistance and capacitance), and when the capacitor reaches its maximum charge, the current stops.

Then, when the electric current is removed, the capacitor discharges again according to RC equation. During this period of time, the capacitor acts like an electric insulator and prevents any more current flow. This process of charging and discharging repeats as long as a power supply is connected to the capacitor.
