Thyristors, an important type of semiconductor components, are devices based on the current and voltage dependent control characteristics of four-layer, three-terminal devices. TRIACs are the acronym for "Triode for Alternate Current" and are a three-terminal, four-layer device. The MAC15A10 TRIAC is a popular device used in a variety of applications.

The MAC15A10 is more typically used in AC (alternating current) applications where it can act as a switch or as a regulator and is suitable for general purpose switching and phase control applications. Internally, the device consists of an MT2 to MT1 diode and a main conduction channel formed between MT1 and MT2 terminals by reverse biasing the MT2 terminal with respect to MT1. When a positive going gate signal is applied to the gate terminal G, current flows from the gate to the main terminal MT2 and then to the main terminal MT1. This forward-biased MT2 to MT1 path leads to a rapid turn-on and current flow from MT1 to MT2 in a manner similar to that of a conventional diode.

The trigger point of the MAC15A10 is the voltage at which the device activates from its off state. The MAC15A10 has a VGT of 1.2 V maximum at 25°C. Furthermore, the turn-on time is temperature sensitive. The threshold voltage and temperature coefficient are given as VGTth=1.2V, VGTTC=−0.15%/°C. Therefore, at elevated temperatures, the MAC15A10 will tend to turn on more quickly than at low temperatures.

The MAC15A10 has an off-state holding current of 10mA. The device has a rating of 8A rms at 400V AC and 10A rms at 250V AC with a peak one cycle non-repetitive surge rating of 50A. Since the device is rated at 400V and only 10mA is required to cause the device to turn-on, the dynamic resistance at turn-on is 40KΩ. Maximum leakage current is measured at 5µA in off-state and the device has a Thermal Resistance Junction to Case (Rth(j-c)) of 0.87°C/W.

The MAC15A10 can be used in a variety of applications, due to its ability to turn-on quickly and its relatively low on-state resistance. Commonly, the shutdown and logic functions are provided by the MAC15A10 in light dimmers, speed controllers, and other AC switching applications.
