Thyristors are semiconductor devices composed of three or four layers of different materials. Within this category are the TRIACs, which are bidirectional, three-terminal dual thyristors with a control gate. The MAC16MG is type of TRIAC that is used for applications controlling AC power, such as in lighting or temperature controls.
A MAC16MG has three terminals; gate, main terminal 1 (MT1) and main terminal 2 (MT2). MT1 and MT2 are connected to each alternate half cycle of an AC power source. The gate is connected to a control circuit, which then control when the MAC16MG conducts current.
The three terminals of the MAC16MG can act in two distinct ways.
ON-State:
When the control circuit applies a positive voltage to the gate, the thyristor will enter the forward conduction state and become ‘ON’. This allows current to flow through the thyristor straight away.
OFF-State:
When the control circuit provides no voltage to the gate, the thyristor will be switched OFF, meaning that no current will pass through it.
Working Principle
When an analog voltage is applied between the gate and MT2, this will produce a small current between these two electrodes. If the voltage applied is between 10 to 12 volts, the current will be sufficient enough to arrive at the value capable of changing the states of the thyristor.
The thyristor will conduct only when the voltage applied between the gate and MT2 is above the current value. Furthermore, when the voltage exceeds the Vgt value, it will turn off the thyristor.
When the voltage applied between gate and MT2 exceeds the value, the thyristor will remain in the conductive state until the applied current falls below Vgt, at which point it will turn off. This necessary as the current flowing through the device can lead to self sustaining oscillations if the device is to remain open-circuited at high frequency without being turned off.
Application Fields of the MAC16MG
The main uses of the MAC16MG are for phase control in AC circuits, for instance in phase dimmers for light bulbs or for switching and control of AC power circuits in domestic appliances, such as electric kettles, dishwashers, washing machines and ovens.
Another application of the MAC16MG is as a sensor switch. It can be used to detect the level of lighting in a room and switch on overflow protection equipment in water or oil tanks.
Besides this, the MAC16MG can be used in the protection of thermostats and motors, for controlling power in contactors, in providing constant temperature and for a variety of AC motor control circuits in air conditioning and ventilation systems.
