Thyristors are semiconductor devices used in the control of electric circuits. They are mainly used to control current flow in circuits and are most commonly used in AC power control applications. The main difference between thyristors and other transistor devices is that thyristors are controlled by a gate signal and are therefore bidirectional devices. In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of the MAC16HCN, a TRIAC.
What is a TRIAC?
A TRIAC is a three-terminal AC (alternating current) semiconductor device which has the unique ability to control current flow in both directions. It is similar in operation to a pair of thyristors back-to-back, but uses only one device. As such, it is often referred to as a "bidirectional triode thyristor" or simply a "bidirectional thyristor". MAC16HCN - Application Field and Working Principle
The MAC16HCN is a high-power 2 Amp TRIAC chip produced by ST Microelectronics. It can be used in a wide range of applications, including load switches, motor speed controllers, light dimmer circuits, and motorized valve control. The chip has a high thermal dissipation and low gate current compared with similar TRIAC chips, making it ideal for low-power motor control and light dimming applications.
The MAC16HCN has a maximum voltage of 800V, which makes it suitable for high-voltage applications. The gate current required to turn the device on and off is only 25mA, making it ideal for low-power applications. The MAC16HCN is also very tolerant of temperature extremes, allowing it to operate in temperatures ranging from - 40°C to + 125°C.
As with all TRIAC chips, the MAC16HCN is a three terminal device. The three terminals are referred to as the Anode (A1), the Gate (G) and the Cathode (C2). In order for the device to be switched on, the Gate (G) must be triggered by a positive voltage. When the Gate (G) is triggered, the current will flow between the Anode (A1) and the Cathode (C2). The device can be turned off by applying a negative voltage to the Gate (G).
The MAC16HCN is an excellent choice for applications requiring high voltage, high power and low gate current, such as motor speed controllers, light dimmer circuits and motorized valve control. Its high thermal dissipation and wide temperature range make it suitable for a wide range of applications.
