Thyristors - TRIACs is an electronic device composed of four alternating layers of alternate P-type and N-type semiconductor material. It is known as a thyristor because it spends different amount of time in each stage or “state” of operation. The MAC16HCDG is a thyristor with a general-purpose blocking technology that, when triggered, turns on the thyristor and permits the current to flow through the load. This is a popular device due to its cost-effectiveness and wide range of uses.
The MAC16HCDG has a customarily rated current of 16A and is predominantly used as a reliable switch in various types of load control systems such as power supplies and lighting. It can also be used in rectifier circuits to convert AC to DC, served as a light dimmer, or used to detect and control power flow. The whole process is known as an “optocouple”, which measures the voltage level between the two devices and provides a signal from the opto-isolator to the thyristor module.
In operating terms, the typical MAC16HCDG will detect the polarization voltage and optically trigger itself when it is above the programmed threshold voltage. Its mechanism is based around a positive polarization, or positive gate current. The light-emitting diode will receive signal from the gate, which then passes the signal to the opto-isolator which then triggers the thyristor.
The output of the MAC16HCDG includes a direct-current voltage, square wave voltage, sine wave voltage, and pulse-width modulation voltage. Both half-wave and full-wave rectification can be used, as well as direct current and alternating current (AC) control. Its main application is in AC rectification, achieved by varying the firing of the thyristor, as well as in pulse-width modulation for variable-speed drives and light dimmers.
The MAC16HCDG is a cost-effective and widely-used thyristor. It has the capacity to control the load current, compared to other switch control devices, due to its two independent gates which provides forward and reverse current control capability. Additionally, its power control provides a much better control than what could be achieved with simple ON/OFF systems, as it regulates its output voltage/current by pulse-width modulation signals. It is a simple, safe and highly-effective thyristor, perfect for many types of load control systems.
