Thyristors - TRIACs

Thyristors are four-layer semiconductor devices that exhibit a graphic behavior in the electric circuit, enabling them to be used as electronic switches. Thyristor-based applications include broadcasting, rectification, and the control of power in electric motors and household appliances. Thyristors can also be used to very precisely control the voltage and flow of electric current through an alternating current (AC) source with high efficiency. This makes them an ideal choice for many applications in the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.

Triacs, also known as Triode for Alternating Current, are a type of Thyristor. They are typically constructed with three alternating junction layers and are used for AC-switching and regulation applications. A Triac is essentially two Thyristors connected in the opposite direction within the same silicon chip. The two parts act as two switches that can open and close in either direction, giving it bidirectional control.

Among the main advantages of Triacs, they are good for AC control applications, such as controlling the speed of an electric motor, the brightness of an incandescent lamp, and the temperature of a heating element. Triacs can also be used to control power circuits for adapter plugs, light dimmers, and AC circuits. Furthermore, since Triacs are bidirectional, they allow for control of both the positive and negative half-waves of the AC waveform.

MAC16HCNG Application Field and Working Principle

The MAC16HCNG is a TRIAC switch designed to reliably control the power supplied to a variety of AC loads. The MAC16HCNG can be used for direct and inductive load applications and requires a wide AC input voltage range of 110 VAC to 240 VAC. The AC output is adjustable from 0 VAC to the input voltage. Its bidirectional control and high output current switching capability makes it suitable for motor and light dimmers, motor controls, temperature controllers, heater control circuits, and other AC load control applications.

The MAC16HCNG uses a high-voltage TRIAC as its main element. When a positive or negative gate signal is applied to the TRIAC gate, the TRIAC will conduct current and allow the AC power to be switched on or off. The main advantage of using a TRIAC is its ability to control both the positive and negative half-cycles of an AC waveform. The gate voltage is used to control the conduction angle of the TRIAC, and therefore, the amount of power supply to the load.

The MAC16HCNG has a built-in MOSFET that can be used for both over-voltage protection and Active burst control. This allows for controlling the on/off time of the load without the need for an external circuit. In addition, it has an adjustable negative gate voltage protected (NGVP) function, which prevents the gate output from being pulled to a negative voltage during the off stage of the TRIAC.
