Thyristors are a solid-state device kind of semiconductor composed of four semiconductor layers, like two PNPN devices connected back to back. Thyristors are divided among different kind of applications, depending on the power capacity and the control signal. One of these categories is TRIACs, an acronym for Triode Alternating Current thyristor, they are used when it is require interrupting alternating current. MAC15SM application field and working principle
Applications
MAC15SM are designed to be used in medium power applications. It is an ideal solution when needing to control motors, heaters, lamps, laser pointer and other home appliances. It has an off-state voltage greater than 1500V, gate trigger current of 13mA, on-state current of 1.5A and maximum power ratings of 400V and 220W. Also, it offers over temperature protection, fast switching time and zero gate trigger current. It offers fast recovery time, a complete absence of transients and safe Reverse Voltage Blocking.
Working Principle
The MAC15SM is built with a PNPN structure that provides of two different states, the off-state and the on-state. In the off-state, no current flows and the control terminal must be supplied with a positive voltage, which will open the thyristor and allow the current to pass. This positive voltage is a gate current, and it is supplied with a special driver circuit. When the gate current is removed, the thyristor closes and the current stops flowing.
In the on-state, the differential between the main current and the gate current must be almost zero, so current can flow between the Anode and the Cathode. The current and voltage are related in a parabolic form, which is controlled by the gate current. The gate current can provide a complete opening, with conduction and the current flow is stable. The control circuit must ensure the complete opening and remain steady to ensure the current and voltage are stable too.
When the gate is open, the current is able to flow between the Anode and the Cathode and the anode current start to rise exponentially, with the device in on-state. The device has a recovery time of under 5μs, so this operation is done rapidly. The gate current must remain on, or the next anode current increase can damage the device, so the control circuit must pay attention to this.
In addition to that, the MAC15SM have a Reverse Voltage Blocking, thanks to the reverse breakdown voltage, which limits the reverse current up to a safe value.
