MCP14A0602-E/MS ​is a high-performance gate driver, an easy-to-use and cost-effective solution for high power buck controller applications.

MCP14A0602-E/MS belongs to PMIC - Gate Drivers, which is widely used for high-current dc-to-dc converter, low-current powered devices such as laptop computers, portable devices and general purpose power supply applications. The gate driver integrates high-side and low-side MOSFETs in an H-bridge configuration and is specially designed to reduce the power losses, extend the efficiency and reduce the size of the converter components. It can be applied to a wide range of input and output voltages for efficient power delivery and load sharing.

The MCP14A0602-E/MS gate driver operates with a wide supply voltage range (3.3V to 12V) and provides a 1.5A constant current source that can control up to four high power MOSFETs, including one low side driver and three high side drivers. On the board, this gate driver has two operating modes, push-pull and single-ended, a thermal shutdown to protect the system and a low on-resistance. In the push-pull operation mode, the high side FETs are OFF at 0V, ON at the VDD , ON at the VDD and OFF at the VEE. In the single-ended operation mode, the FETs are ON at VDD and OFF at 0V.

The working principle of MCP14A0602-E/MS is based on the pre drivers and fast switching structure. The pre drivers are used to turn on and off the power MOSFETs quicker, which improves the device efficiency and response time. The fast switching structure reduces the PWM switching frequency and output ripple, allowing the devices to operate at higher frequencies without the need of additional components. The high-side pre drivers have an internal current limit that prevents overloading of the MOSFETs. The low-side pre driver has an internal current limit that prevents overloading of the output inductor.

The low on-resistance of MCP14A0602-E/MS allows for a high current transfer and the integrated thermal shutdown protects the system from excessive power dissipation. Because it operates with a wide operating temperature range, it is suitable for high temperature applications. It also features a wide input and output voltage range, allowing it to be used in a variety of applications.
