PMIC or power management integrated circuit (PMIC) are integrated circuits that are used to regulate power in electronic devices and can include functions such as voltage regulation, voltage switching, voltage scaling and current monitoring. Gate drivers are power semiconductor devices used to control the flow of current between two terminals of a power circuit. Gate drivers are important as they offer a protection barrier between the high voltage power signals and the low voltage control signals from the PMIC.The MIC4421ZM is a low-side gate driver with an integrated charge-pump circuit, offering a cost-effective solution for automotive, industrial and consumer applications that require the driving of IGBTs and MOSFETs. The charge pump circuit of the MIC4421ZM extends the gate drive circuit’s operating voltage range, allowing it to reach 20V VCC. This device is used in a variety of applications such as motor drivers, power supplies, solenoid drivers and solid state relays.The MIC4421ZM is designed to drive the gate of a power FET in either a push‐pull or a half bridge configuration. Its features include a logic compatible input level, logic level translation, reverse current blocking and programmable slow turn off. Its integrated charge pump circuit increases the gate drive voltage up to 20V, making it suitable for driving higher voltage FETs.The MIC4421ZM features two logic compatible inputs, the pulse level input, PL, and the often referred to as the enable input, EN. The PL input provides the gate drive, ensuring that the power FET is switching at the fastest speed possible, while the EN input enables or disables the gate drive. These two inputs are logic compatible, accepting a wide range of input voltage levels and switching thresholds.
The MIC4421ZM also has a reverse current blocking feature. This feature prevents current from flowing in the reverse direction and damaging the power FET. This is done by disabling the gate voltage, when the voltage across the FET becomes negative. This is an important feature for power supply applications, where the output voltage can sometimes fall below the regulated level for short periods of time.The MIC4421ZM also features a programmable slow turn off. This feature allows the user to determine the off-time of the gate drive, and thus the speed of turn-off of the FET, by setting the Slow Turn Off Delay SOD to the desired value. This ensures a controlled path for the current, avoiding spurious turn-on of the FET and possible damage.In conclusion, the MIC4421ZM is a low-side gate driver with an integrated charge-pump circuit, providing a cost-effective solution for driving IGBTs and MOSFETs for a variety of automotive, industrial and consumer applications.
