MIC5200-3.3BS application field and working principle

Introduction:The MIC5200-3.3BS is a cost-effective Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR) suitable for applications requiring both low quiescent current and low dropout performance. The device is capable of delivering a single output voltage of 3.3V, with an input voltage range of up to 5.5V. The MIC5200-3.3BS offers best-in-class performance for low-noise and low-ripple applications and is suitable for driving low-power devices such as digital-potentiometers (DP), microcontrollers and flash memory.

Working Principle

The MIC5200-3.3BS is a decentered PNP-type translinear controlled LVR. Its low-noise, ripple-free and precision regulated output voltage is determined by zener-stabilized voltage dividers (R1 and R3) at the output terminal. All devices feature an enable/disable pin, which allows for applications requiring an enable/disable capability. When disabled, the device draws extremely low quiescent current (20nA).

The MIC5200-3.3BS also features a very accurate trim resistor (R2) that sets the output voltage within +/-3%. The output voltage can be set to a voltage within the absolute maximum rating (VOUTmax) by adjusting the trim resistor, R2. The output voltage is trimmed to a specified level, enabling the device to maintain a precision-regulated output voltage over the full operating temperature range with a low-drift operation and low-noise performance. Internally, there is a low-noise operational amplifier (op-amp) for driving a series output FET, which eliminates any overshoot or undershoot. Additionally, a rise and fall time as low as 10µs is achievable. The MIC5200-3.3BS also has a wide input-voltage range and can tolerate transient surge load currents up to 10A.
