MIC5206-3.2BM5-TR Application Field and Working Principle

Overview

The MIC5206-3.2BM5-TR is a ultra low-cost and ultra low-power CMOS low-dropout (LDO) regulator optimized for battery powered applications. It operates from an input voltage of 3.0V to 5.5V and provides an output regulated voltage from +1.0V to +3.3V. The MIC5206 integrates a current limited power N-MOSFET and current-sense comparator to limit its output current to 350 mA. The MIC5206 also features low quiescent current in power off or suspend mode.The MIC5206 provides fast response time: it has an input impedance of only 49K and the output voltage can be adjusted by using external resistors. It offers excellent load regulation too: the maximum output voltage deviation at full load is 18mV.Other features include high PSRR, low output noise, low shutdown current, and over-temperature protection. The MIC5206-3.2BM5-TR is provided in a TSOT23-5 package and is rated from 0°C to +85°C.

Working Principle

The MIC5206-3.2BM5-TR includes an error amplifier, current sense comparator and a power N-MOSFET arranged in a 3.2V low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator. The error amplifier compares the desired output voltage set by a pair of external resistors with a reference voltage and generates an error signal. This signal is used to control the gate voltage of the power N-MOSFET. The power N-MOSFET generates a low-impedance output path and allows current to flow to the load. The current-sense comparator monitors both the output current and the internal power transistor voltage drop, then determines when to reduce the gate voltage to shut off the MOSFET and protect the system from over-current conditions.The MIC5206 includes a low-power undervoltage lockout (UVLO) function to prevent the output from providing an incorrect regulated voltage when the input voltage is not sufficient. The MIC5206 also features a shutdown mode to reduce quiescent current when the system is in suspend mode.
