MP4KE22A

The MP4KE22A is a unidirectional monolithic silicon avalanche diode which provides superior performance as an ESD protector. The semiconductor provides excellent protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD) over a wide temperature range with low reverse leakage current and low capacitance. It features a low clamping voltage and can clamp high peak current pulses such as those produced by ESD stresses. The structure of this device comprises a p+ N well junction over an N type substrate. An additional blocking diode can be connected in parallel to provide even lower clamping voltage.

Application

The MP4KE22A is ideal for many applications, including data lines in cellphones, laptop computers, PDAs, and portable electronics. It is particularly suitable for use in ESD-sensitive applications requiring a high-clamping voltage such as HDTVs, satellite TV and set-top boxes, USB Cables, High-Speed Ethernet, Telephone/Fax/Modem, Audio/Hi-Fi Systems, LCD/LED Displays, Industrial Controls, and Automation Equipment. It can also be used to protect sensitive low voltage application such as micro controllers, memory ICs, and ASICs as well as consumer applications such as digital cameras.

Working Principle

The MP4KE22A unidirectional monolithic silicon avalanche diode is a voltage clamping device that is designed to protect from transient overvoltage. This device works by allowing a controlled amount of current to flow through it when a voltage above the breakdown voltage of the device is applied. The current is limited to a safe level during normal operation and the device clamps the voltage so that it does not exceed the breakdown voltage. This ensures that the protected device is not damaged due to the transient voltage.

The device is designed to protect low voltage ESD sensitive devices from ESD events as defined by IEC 61000-4-2 safety regulations. The device\'s low voltage clamping performance is guaranteed up to 15kV and the IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 for contact discharge and 8kV for air discharge. The device can also dissipate high peak currents such as those produced by ESD events without failure.

The MP4KE22A is composed of a p+ N well junction over an n-type substrate. This monolithic structure minimizes the response time of the device and provides excellent clamping capabilities and low clamping voltage. The additional blocking diode connected in parallel lowers the clamping voltage even further. The device is packaged into a small, SOT-23-6L package, which makes it easy to install and use in space-constrained designs.
