The MP4KE43A is a silicon uni-directional thyristor surge protection diode designed to meet the requirements for most telecom applications. It offers excellent clamping capability and is designed to protect sensitive telecom devices from high surge currents. The MP4KE43A is designed for use in applications such as Protection of communication interfaces, telephone systems, terminals, modems and power supply interfaces.

The working principle of the MP4KE43A is based on a semiconductor protection device - Transil. Transil consists of a silicon diode or several series-connected diodes, a gas discharge tube with external connection (GDT), and a thermally sensitive element (TSE). The GDT changes the barrier voltage as the current flowing through it reaches the rated value. The TSE starts the sequence of events by becoming resistive and allowing transients to flow towards the external connection. The current flowing through the GDT then rapidly heats up the gas in the chamber and causes an arc between the internal and external electrodes. When the internal part of the GDT arc becomes more resistant, the current flow reverses, and the gas in the chamber cools until it reaches its previous dielectric strength. The TSE immediately becomes insulating again and the protection device is closed.

The MP4KE43A is designed to protect equipment from transient overvoltage, and incorporates two major elements:

  • A silicon diode, which has a low forward voltage drop and fast response. This diode acts as a shield to prevent transients from flowing to the protection device.
  • An avalanche diode, which can withstand high surge currents. This diode absorbs any transient surge currents and can divert the current to the ground safely.

The MP4KE43A is designed with an overvoltage protection circuit to limit the voltage applied to the protection device. If the voltage exceeds the protection level, this circuit will activate the transistor control circuit, disconnecting the equipment from the power supply and preventing any overvoltage situation. This protection device is also designed to ensure that the transient current is safely absorbed and discharged to ground.
