Thyristors - TRIACs

Thyristors and TRIACs are two equivalent devices used predominantly in digital switching and power control applications. Both devices are commonly referred to as thyristors and are often used interchangeably in a variety of practical applications. However, there are certain differences between the two devices which should be taken into consideration when choosing a device for a particular task.The Q4015L556 is a type of Bidirectional Thyristor, also known as a TRIAC. The primary advantage of this TRIAC device is its ability to conduct in both directions, making it a popular choice for AC switching applications. This device is also remarkable for its repeatability and low power loss when compared to other comparable thyristor devices.The basic structure of a TRIAC comprises two SCR (siliconcontrolled rectifier) segements back to back, with one anode and a common gate connection. When the gate voltage is applied, both SCR’s are triggered, causing current to flow between the anodes. Since both anodes are connected, the current is conductive in both directions.The working principle of a TRIAC is used to control the power delivered to the load, with the safe operating area defined by the device’s Id-Vd plot. The application of a gate voltage is used to limit the amount of power delivered to the load, by restricting the value of the current to its maximum value for the applied applied periodic half cycle duration.The power delivered to the load is regulated in three modes: Linear, Quadrant, and Triangular. In Linear mode, the Thyristor limit the current to a constant value, based on the instantaneous input voltage. In Quadrant mode, the Thyristor switches current on or off in four different patterns, depending on the input voltage. In Triangular mode, the Thyristor switches current off in two distinct regions of the input voltage.Despite the obvious differences between Thyristors and TRIACs, the two devices are generally used interchangeably in various applications.
