SA11CA R0G is classified as a TVS which means Transient Voltage Suppressor. This type of diode is a widely used semiconductor device that is used as a form of protection in circuits. It serves the purpose of handling sudden, unexpected and potentially harmful voltage spikes in electrical circuits, protecting it from accidents frequent in these power systems or components.

SA11CA R0G comes with working voltage up to 11V Reverse Standoff Voltage, and it has high peak pulse current of 400A @ 8/20μs. The applications of this device are mainly for AC socket and SPD (Surge Protection Device) for electrical power supply. It can protect the circuit from high surge current originated from industrial environment, lightning strike or switch inductive loading.

The working principle of SA11CA R0G is to reduce the risk of failure in connector, power supply or any other device connected to the circuit, by clamping the voltage spike. As voltage spikes are generated in vulnerable circuit, SA11CA R0G absorbs electrostatic transient energy and discharges it to the ground. This reduces the risk of component or equipment damage caused by excessive current.

SA11CA R0G is generally made of two parts: the plastic encapsulation which separates the diode and metal tab of the diode electrode. The first part of the device, the plastic encapsulation, provides electrical insulation between the component and the second part- the metal tab of the diode electrode. The metal tab of the diode electrode has a floating capacitance Cd which is of critical importance in reducing its clamping voltage.

We can easily recognize the operation of SA11CA R0G from the following. When an extremely high surge is fed, the metal tab of the diode electrode will be affected by instantaneously increasing electric field, which causes large amount of charge to enter the electrode. At the same time, the anode of the diode will start to accumulate large amount of charge, forming the clamp voltage across the diode. This will then provide a current flow path for the surge to bypass the vulnerable circuit.

SA11CA R0G has an extremely critical characteristics—clamping voltage. Clamping voltage is the voltage built up between the anode and the cathode of a semiconductor diode when it is subjected to at least 1 nanosecond wide spike. This is because the diode has a junction capacitance Cd, and it can withstand voltage higher than this junction capacitance voltage before it actually conducts.

The highest clamping voltage that a SA11CA R0G diode can tolerate is known as its breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage of a diode is generally equal to its static breakdown voltage, meaning the voltage it can tolerate without any signs of damage. When the breakdown voltage of the diode is exceeded, the lack of current in the device causes excessive heat, leading to electrode melting, component damage, and even fire in some cases.

To prevent damage to the devices, SA11CA R0G also usually has an externally added safety margin. This means that the diode can operate up to a voltage 10 times higher than its static breakdown voltage. This means that when a surge reaches SA11CA R0G, it will be clamped at a voltage far below its breakdown voltage, preventing the device from damage.
