Clocks and timing mechanisms are crucial components in a wide array of digital systems. From smartphones to thermostats, from medical devices to manufacturing robotics, devices of all shapes and sizes rely on precision clocks to keep time and make sure that operations occur as expected. To meet these needs Claridge have developed the SI4112-D-GMR, a range of automotive-grade frequency synthesizers for the generation of tight frequency control for critical timing requirements.

The SI4112-D-GMR type generator is a standard clock generator chip designed to provide a low-jitter clock signal up to a frequency of 1.2GHz. It is designed to be used in a range of applications including precision or ultra-low-jitter clock sources, high speed data distribution, system synchronization and clock multiplication or generation. The SI4112-D-GMR is manufactured in a space-saving 10 mm x 10 mm package, suitable for applications where space is at a premium.

The working principle is based on a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) system which is able to generate high frequency clock signal from an input reference frequency. The SI4112-D-GMR is designed to accept a wide range of input references, with a maximum frequency of 50 MHz. The clock is generated by an oscillator circuit in the chip, with the PLL system synchronising the output frequency to the input signal. The PLL is able to adjust the output frequency precisely to the desired setting, with a typical phase jitter of around 200fs.

The SI4112-D-GMR provides a range of features to enhance its functionality, including an on-chip phase detector, loop-filter and VCO control, and separate power supply for control circuit and VCO generator. This makes it ideal for use in low-noise and/or low-power applications, such as automotive and medical devices.
