Most people know little about Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs), also known as transient voltage surge suppressors or simply voltage suppressors. But it is an important tool for surge protection in any electronic circuit. The SM6S26ATHE3/I is an example of such a device. As a TVS, it is designed to protect electronic circuits from surges of voltage and current caused by lightning, electrostatic discharges, and other transients.

Working Principle of the SM6S26ATHE3/I

The SM6S26ATHE3/I is essentially a low capacitance Zener diode with ESD protection integrated into one package. It has two sections, the Zener diode which absorbs the surge, and the ESD protection which provides additional protection against electrostatic discharges. The ESD protection is comprised of a two resistors connected in series and in parallel with the Zener diode, and it functions by shunting the surge voltage to ground, protecting the rest of the circuit from damage.

At normal operating voltage levels, the Zener diode does not conduct current. However, when a voltage transient above the Zener diode breakdown voltage is applied, the Zener diode begins to conduct current, dissipating the energy of the transient. This limits the voltage applied to the rest of the circuit and prevents damage.

The ESD protection is triggered when the transient voltage exceeds the junction breakdown voltage of the resistors. When this happens, the resistor is “zapped”, dissipating the remainder of the energy and protecting the circuit.

The combination of the Zener diode and the ESD protection makes the SM6S26ATHE3/I an effective surge protector for a variety of circuits. It not only limits the voltage applied to the circuit, but it also prevents any residual energy from damaging the circuit. This makes it ideal for use in automotive, medical, and industrial applications.
